Feather Light Guitars

Feather light electric guitars are somewhat rare. We build these for players every week at Haywire Custom Guitars. The body is baked Swamp Ash. Here is a link to a video for you. Greg Dalton, music director of Legends in Concert Myrtle Beach is playing the same guitar with humbuckers: https://youtu.be/i5H_ajv4KIU
We build many of these for older players, players with neck and back issues and guitarists who just want a very light guitar. Guitars for all players need to be very easy, light weight, well balanced, easy to maneuver and enjoyable to play. Our Featherlight guitars from the Custom shop are easy to hold, play and balance. At Haywire Custom Guitars we take the classic look of the double and single cutaway guitars and lighten it and drop the weight by up to 30 percent by baking the moisture out. As a result, each Swamp Ash body we build is Featherlight.

Benefits of a light body guitar

Guitarists who have ever played guitar while standing for any length of time, in long rehearsals or live performances, know all too well the exhausting and uncomfortable constant feeling of the guitar strap pulling the guitar down into your shoulders all night long.

A lighter guitar body is easier to balance on your body for extended periods of time when playing gigs. It can also resonate louder.  Akin to hollow body guitars they are typically lighter even though they are solid body guitars. Lightness makes them more comfortable to play for long gigs.

Overall feather light guitars will be louder and add more “boom” to the notes. They are more comfortable for people who have a smaller constitution.

While heavy guitars can sound good, all other things being equal. The lighter ones are much better for your health and well-being.

With every song played on a heavy guitar, you can feel the compression in your vertebrae and your feet pressing into the hard floor. It can really weigh you down after a while.

Lighter guitars and feather light guitars have a more balanced sound and longer sustain. Still, the sound of a guitar may be influenced by factors including the wood, pickups, strings, and hardware. The weight of the guitar itself will not necessarily determine its sound virtues. Lighter guitars will resonate more freely and produce a more vibrant sustain and louder tone.  They even feel better.  Personal need, age, physical health and playing style take on a significant role in determining whether to use a light body guitar. Lighter guitars can make your playing time more enjoyable and less painful.
