Get A Great Guitar Setup

Where can I find a great guitar setup-Myrtle Beach area? What is a great guitar setup?  Why set up a guitar?  Where specifically does it need it?  When does my guitar need a setup?  Who needs a guitar setup?

One of the most frequently asked guitar questions by players has to be  “does my guitar need a setup?”

The ” guitar setup” is what is done to get all of the parts that make the guitar playable, work and talk to each other.

A setup will put all of those parts in harmony. When all the parts are working and speaking together then the guitar transforms into a real instrument for a professional.

Playing style and comfort play a pivotal role in getting the guitar exactly right for a particular player. After all isn’t that who the setup is for?

No matter what level a guitar player is playing at, they will always appreciate what happens after his guitar is set up properly for them. They will be inspired to play.

I am speaking about the specific parts that impact feel, ease of play, in-tune playing (called intonation), string height, better known as “action”, proper nut slot height and of course the truss rod adjustment.

However there are other factors that figure into an accurate dialed-in setup equation such as: pickup height adjustments, new strings, fret level and crowning as well.

All of these factor have a bearing on accuracy, comfort and in-tune playing and happiness of the guitar player.

The perfect setup

The perfect setup is a theory. However, in practice a “perfect setup” is tailored to the player for whom it is intended. It is only perfect when the player says so.

great guitar setup for one player may be a disaster for another player. A great one is very specific to an individual guitar player.

Therefore, it is incumbent on the Luthier or guitar tech to get it exactly right for the player needing the setup otherwise it’s a failure.

Not all setups are equal and not all guitar players are equal, but all setups can be great if targeted directly to the individual needing it.

have the player sit down in front of the Luthier…

The most obvious and best way to accomplish this is to have the player sit down in front of the Luthier, describe what he wants, then have the tech complete the setup in his presence.

This is how we complete a setup about 90% of the time at the Haywire Custom Guitars-Custom Shop. After we complete the initial setup, the guitar is then handed to the player for testing and his opinion.

Once he plays it then the real test occurs. Is it closer to what the guitarist had in mind? Is it better than before? Can it be better and closer to what the player needs?

If not, then fine tuning tweaks are made to his specifications. This back and forth or fine tuning and player testing continues until the player decides it is exactly right for his style and comfort level.

It is only at that point where you have a “perfect setup”.

As previously mentioned, ” The perfect setup is a theory. However, in practice a “perfect setup” is only determined by the player for whom it is intended. It is only perfect when the player says so.”

get some prior history of the player before a setup

A full and complete setup includes adjustments to all primary action points. Height of the nut slots, truss rod adjustment, and saddle height are the main areas of interest.

It’s always helps to get some prior history of the player for whom the setup is being performed. First, what is the playing style of the guitar owner?

Are they heavy handed players or do they have a very fast light-touch?  Are they solo artists or performing with others.

How long does a typical performance last?  What gauge strings do they prefer?  How low do they need their string action?

A guitar set up is not a “repair” but rather an adjustment to a guitar’s strings, neck, bridge, and nut.

It is a series of adjustments made to a guitar to ensure optimal comfort, playability and sound, including adjusting the truss rod, string action, intonation, and pickup height, among other things.

Among them are the following:

Neck Relief: Adjusting the truss rod to ensure the neck has the correct amount of bow (relief) for optimal playability, to prevent buzzing but keeping the intonation and action correct.

String Action: Setting the height of the strings above the fretboard, which affects ease of play, overall tone, consistent string height and intonation all the way down.

Intonation: Ensuring that the guitar is in tune across the entire fretboard so notes will sound correctly and remain in tune on all frets.

Intonation: Ensuring that the guitar is in tune across the entire fretboard so notes will sound correctly and remain in tune on all frets.

Nut: Checking the nut slots to ensure the strings slide without binding and that the depth of the slots is correct.

Bridge: Adjusting the bridge to set the correct angle of string height to maintain uniformity with the truss rod and nut adjustments.

Pickup Height: Adjusting the height of the pickups for optimal tone and output. Too far away and tone and volume suffer. Too close and the magnets inhibit string vibration and sustain.

Strings: Installing the correct gauge for the player for maximum comfort and tone.

Why is a Guitar Setup Important?

To re-state, ” No matter what level a guitar player is playing at, they will always appreciate what happens after his guitar is set up. They will be inspired to play.”

The properly set-up guitar will feel more comfortable and easier to play, with no buzzing, easier fretting, notes will be in tune and most of all the player will be happy and inspired to play.

A good set-up will sound great, maintain tuning stability with clear notes and balanced action across the fretboard.

A setup must be tailored to the player’s individual comfort preferences, such as string gauge and action height.

Other considerations include:

1. Fret Level is an essential operation for low action which cannot be achieved without it.

2. Fret Crowning is necessary to return the crown back to the top of a flat leveled fret.

3. Dressing the sharp ends of frets when frets protrude from the side of the guitar neck.

4. Polishing will make smooth string bending a pleasure.

5. Radius strings for consistency of distance to the frets

In conclusion, a setup is a special set of steps that involve checking measurements, making adjustments, and testing a guitar.

We do this to give the guitars a comfortable feel and excellent ease of playability for the specific player.

Without a setup, a guitar will be uncomfortable, out of tune and useless as a vocal accompaniment instrument.

A setup must be tailored to the player’s individual comfort preferences

It makes your guitar feel just right, sound great and inspires you. There are measurable differences between adequate and great set ups, but the skill to measure those differences is the difference.

It levels the playing field for the average guitar player and even gives him an advantage.

A “great setup” is accomplished by achieving the necessary playability requirements specific to an individual player. It allows that player to extract what is needed from the instrument. Personal preference is the goal.

The great setup is accomplished by adjusting many things and not just one. A well-setup guitar will play consistently all the way up and down the neck, with no buzzing frets, be in tune and sound great.

It won’t require excessive hand pressure to play.  No empirical evidence has ever put to rest what a “great setup” is.  It’s a nebulous term.  Only when the luthier and player agree that it is great is when it truly is a great guitar setup.
