The “7 Seven Sound Switch” guitar mod, also known as the David Gilmour Strat mod or Gilmore wiring mod, provides two additional pickup combinations to a standard Fender Stratocaster: neck and bridge pickups in parallel, and all three pickups together. It’s achieved by adding a simple switch (either a mini-toggle or push-pull pot) to activate the neck pickup in positions where it isn’t normally available on the 5-way selector switch. This unlocks a “Telecaster-like” sound and a fuller rhythm tone, offering greater tonal versatility.
- Standard 5-way switch: A typical Stratocaster uses a 5-way switch to select different combinations of its three pickups.
- The Added Switch: A mini-toggle switch or push-pull pot is wired to the neck pickup.
- New Combinations:
- Neck + Bridge: When the toggle switch is engaged, it adds the neck pickup to the standard bridge and middle setting, creating a neck and bridge combination. This is similar to the sound of a Telecaster.
- All three pickups: In positions 4 and 5 of the 5-way switch (which normally only use the bridge and middle, or just the bridge), flipping the toggle switch engages all three pickups simultaneously. This provides a full and fat-sounding tone. You’re going to love having all of the sounds and features of the two most popular single and double cutaway style solid body guitars combined into one amazing instrument. The three pickup design with enhanced switching configuration allows the player to evoke the sounds of Hendrix, Clapton, and everything in between.
