What are guitar pickups?

A guitar pickup is a transducer that converts the mechanical vibrations of metal strings into an electrical signal, which is then sent to an amplifier to create sound. It works using magnets wrapped in coils of wire.  When guitar strings vibrate, they disturb the magnetic field, inducing a weak electrical current in the wire that mirrors the string’s movement and is amplified into the recognizable electric guitar tone called a signal.

Guitar pickups are simply microphones that “pick up” or “sense” the vibrations of the strings of your electric guitar. They convert the vibrations into sound that can be boosted with an amplifier. The “quality” of the sound produced depends on how well they are made. Then they send that signal to the amp.

Why are there so many pickup makers?

The reason we have more than one guitar “Pickup Manufacturer” is because each one claims to be able to do it better. Some do and some don’t. It’s simply the personal choice of a guitar player. Many companies produce gasoline too and each one claims to do it better. Which brand is really better?  It’s up to you to decide. Fortunately,  gas works the same in almost every car.

Guitar pickups do not sound the same in every amp because the amplifier significantly shapes the pickup’s signal, but the pickup’s inherent characteristics (like coil type, magnets, and construction) also define the core tone; different amps (tube vs. solid state, clean vs. high-gain) color the sound differently, interacting uniquely with the pickup’s output and frequency response.
Why the Sound Varies:
  • Amplifier Build and Character: Each amp has a distinct “voice,” affecting clarity (Signal-to-Noise Ratio), distortion (Total Harmonic Distortion), and frequency response (EQ). A clean Fender amp will react differently than a high-gain Marshall. As well tube vs. Solid State amps vary the sound and signal.
  • Pickup Interaction: A pickup’s output (strength) and frequency curve hit the amp’s input differently. A hotter pickup might drive an amp into natural overdrive sooner than a lower-output one. Pickup proximity to a string has a huge effect on sound translation.
  • Signal through the Chain: The entire signal chain matters – pickups, guitar pots, cables, pedals, and the amp’s pre-amp and power section, the speaker, speaker type and speaker size all contribute to the sound of guitar pickups. 

    Signal processing changes sound signals by manipulating the core properties of frequency (pitch/tone), amplitude (loudness/dynamics), time (effects like delay/reverb), and phase.

    Using techniques like EQ, compression, reverb, and filtering to shape, clean, enhance will change a signal. Creatively altering audio and transforming it from raw input into something more defined, balanced, or stylized further changes the signal.

  • Humbuckers (darker, heavier) vs. Single Coils (brighter, crisper).

  • Alnico magnets vs. ceramic magnets.
  • Construction: 
  • Wire gauge, number of turns, winding style (scattered vs. uniform).
The Takeaway
While a pickup’s fundamental tone comes from its design, the amplifier and subsequent signal chain are crucial partners in shaping that sound. Meaning a pickup will always sound different, sometimes dramatically so, when plugged into a different amplifier and/or processed in different ways. Raw audio is always different from a processed signal.

If you think you need new pickups, think again. Why?

Many players are fooled into believing that they need new pickups. There is constant pressure on guitar players by the pickup manufacturers, guitar forums, peer pressure, improperly adjusted pickups, the wrong pickups in the wrong application, improperly wired pickups, poor supporting electronics such as a bad volume pot, incorrect electronics such as a poor application of the wrong capacitor in a circuit and many more reasons.

Finally and most importantly, poor playing techniques

Poor playing techniques make guitar pickups seem bad in any setting, simply by introducing unwanted noise. Examples include: (picking the wrong strings, hitting pole pieces, muting strings), inconsistent volume/tone (uneven picking, poor fretting), muddiness (pressing strings too hard), or excessive dirt (magnetic pull while using too heavy magnets), all masking the pickup’s true potential with raw, uncontrolled sounds. The player blames the gear, not their habits. Hand technique is extremely important for achieving a good sound. Fretting the strings properly with precision, accuracy with just the right pressure can make all the difference between a dull, lifeless, buzzy note and one that resonates with energy, groove and feel.

Some guitar players even blame their equipment for a bad sound. If you’re a professional, experienced musician then you understand   achieving a great sound is a combination of the instrument, the amplifier, playing technique, and good tone and volume settings. Guitar players often blame their equipment for a bad sound due to many factors. Included is a misunderstanding of how sound is produced. This allows them from taking responsibility. Blaming the gear is often a guitarists best defense mechanism to protect an ego from any perceived  playing failures. Attributing bad tone to gear rather than skill can be a great excuse to avoid the discipline and effort required for great playing. It’s a wonderful reason for a lack of progress. Roy Buchanan once told me regarding his tone, “it’s all in the hands”.

Gear Acquisition Syndrome

Unfortunately, with many players, there is a constant desire to buy new equipment. This can be rooted in a nonsensical belief that, “better gear = better sound”.  An” over-consumption” attitude and “machine-like” rote behavior forgives players and re-enforces the belief that the solution for any “tone issue” is a new purchase!  What is really missing? Possibly lack of understanding how to properly use their existing tools.  However, sometimes, an individual’s identity is constructed entirely through the brands and goods they consume, essentially becoming a reflection of their purchases. Have your gear checked out by a great tech who can help you rather than push you into any unnecessary purchases.

It’s not always the guitar pickups

At the end of the day, professionals are more prepared. They focus on making the gear work for them and the playing situation. Amateurs tend to blame the gear, thereby blaming themselves indirectly. Pros are more realistic. For a pro guitar player the message is clear. Look for a pickup that will deliver a clear clean undisturbed signal to your amp. Once you have an excellent signal from your guitar, then you can process it any way you’d like.

It’s important to remember, Successful musicians consistently do things that unsuccessful musicians are unwilling or unable to do. Be successful!
