A Neck Pocket Finish Crack In my Guitar!  Time to worry?

A small surface crack barely visible to the eye in a guitar where the body joins the neck on either side can be worrisome at first glance.

This is a very common occurrence for Stratocasters and other bolt-on neck guitars. It’s what we call a ‘neck pocket finish crack.’ Because the wood of the neck and body is more pliable than the thick paint, tiny shifts in temperature or humidity cause the finish to develop these hairline stress fractures. Since it isn’t following the wood grain, it’s purely cosmetic and won’t affect the guitar’s stability, play-ability, or tone. Sometimes they can appear around the input jack area as well.  Picking up a guitar solely by the neck or leaning it against a wall can cause enough flexing to crack the finish at the joint.

What is it?

  • It is a common “Stress Fracture”: These hairline cracks occur in roughly 97% of Stratocasters eventually. They are typically caused by the neck and body woods expanding and contracting at different rates due to temperature or humidity changes, while the less flexible finish (polyurethane or polyester) remains rigid and cracks under the stress.

A stress fracture in a guitar finish is a hairline crack caused by the lacquer or paint failing to flex when the underlying wood expands, contracts, or shifts, often due to humidity changes, temperature shocks, or physical pressure on joints like the neck pocket. These cracks, which commonly appear on guitars with brittle or aged finishes, are typically aesthetic issues that do not penetrate the wood itself, although they can sometimes indicate deeper structural stress. Most of the time they don’t. The crack is only paint-deep and does not follow the natural grain of the wood, the structural integrity of the neck joint is not compromised. We see this every day.

  • Stress Fractures in Finish: The finish, especially on newer Fender Strat and Telecaster style guitars, is often thicker and less pliable than the underlying timber, leading to cracking at the high-stress area where the neck joins the body.
  • Bolt-On Neck Design: The neck joint is a common point for minor movement under string tension. If the neck screws are not tightened perfectly, or due to normal, minor shifts, the finish in that corner cracks.
  • Environmental Factors: Rapid changes in temperature and humidity cause the wood and the finish to expand and contract at different rates, leading to “checking” or cracks.
  • Cosmetic Nature: These cracks are rarely structural (meaning the wood itself isn’t broken) and are considered normal cosmetic wear on bolt-on neck guitars.
