It is necessary to measure a guitar neck that you love so it’s shape, profile and thickness feel can be duplicated and transferred to a neck that you would like to have shaved. Then you’ll have the old familiar neck profile on your new guitar!
Shaving a guitar neck is a process that removes wood from the neck of a guitar to make it more comfortable to play. We do it with hand tools like rasps, chisels, scraper blades, and sandpaper. However, it is necessary to communicate how much needs to be shaved. The more accurate and precise your request, the better the outcome will be.
Why shave your guitar neck? Two reasons for shaving a guitar neck. To get things right we measure a guitar neck to know where it is in order to find where we’re going with it.
Comfort: Shaving a guitar neck can make it more comfortable to play, especially for those who find the thickness of the neck to be an impediment to their playing. Sometimes there is just too much wood for the size of your hands to wrap around. You love the guitar, the sound, weight but the neck is just too fat to hold comfortably. It can slow down your playing immensely.
Feel: Subtle changes to the shape of a guitar neck can make a surprising difference to its balance and feel. Do you want to be constantly reminded that the neck is not a good fit while playing or would you rather just think about the music and the performance?
Shaving a guitar neck at Haywire Custom Guitars can make a huge difference in feel.
