Adjusting Pole Pieces On Guitar Pickups

Adjusting pole pieces on guitar pickups involves raising or lowering individual pole pieces to fine-tune string balance and output. This can help achieve a more balanced and articulate sound, particularly for humbucker pickups. Start by ensuring the pickups are at the correct height, then make small adjustments to the pole pieces, listening closely after each change.
Here’s a more detailed approach:
1. Start with Pickup Height:
Make sure the pickups are at the correct height relative to the strings, as this is the first step in achieving good tone and balance.
You can use a string gauge or a radius gauge to measure the string height and ensure it’s consistent across all strings.
2. Understand Pole Piece Adjustment:
Raising pole pieces: Increases the magnetic field’s strength near the string, resulting in a louder and more forceful output.
Lowering pole pieces: Reduces the string’s output and can make the tone more muted.
Humbucker adjustments: Humbuckers often benefit from raising the bass-side pole pieces slightly, while keeping the treble side flush with the bobbin and possibly raising it fractionally.
3. Adjust Pole Pieces in Small Increments:
Start by adjusting the pole pieces in small increments (e.g., 1/4-turn at a time).
Listen closely after each adjustment to hear the difference in tone and balance.
You can use a screwdriver to turn the pole piece screws.
4. General Guidelines for Pole Piece Adjustment:
Bass and Treble Extremes:
.
Some players find that raising the pole pieces on the two lowest and two highest strings can create a more crisp and defined sound.
Middle Strings:
.
The pole pieces for the middle strings (B and G) can sometimes be lowered to achieve a more balanced overall tone.
String Balance:
.
Experiment with raising or lowering individual pole pieces to achieve the desired balance and output across all strings.
5. Specific Adjustments for Humbuckers:
Bass Side:
.
Raising the bass-side pole pieces can increase the output and fullness of the lower frequencies.
Treble Side:
.
Keeping the treble side pole pieces at the same height as the bobbin or slightly higher can help balance the overall output and clarity.
6. Considerations for Single-Coil Pickups:
Single-coil pickups may not have the same level of pole piece adjustability as humbuckers.
In some cases, single-coils may be adjusted by raising or lowering the pole pieces to a degree that they are flush with the pickup cover.
7. Listening and Fine-Tuning:
After making adjustments, listen closely to the tone and output of each string.
Make further adjustments as needed to achieve the desired sound and balance.
Don’t be afraid to experiment and find what works best for your playing style and preferences.
