Aging Guitars

Neck Pocket Finish Crack

A Neck Pocket Finish Crack barely visible. Worry time?? A small surface crack barely visible to the eye in a guitar where the body joins the neck on either side can be worrisome at first glance. This is a very common occurrence for Stratocasters and other bolt-on neck guitars. It’s what we call a 'neck pocket finish crack.' Because the wood of the neck and body is more pliable than the thick paint, tiny shifts in temperature or humidity cause the finish to develop these hairline stress fractures. Since it isn't following the wood grain, it's purely cosmetic and won't affect the guitar's stability, playability, or tone. Sometimes they can appear around the input jack area as well.

Aging Guitars

Aging guitars often sound better than newer ones as they dry out over time which causes them to become more resonant tone with better sustain. Play your old guitar often and help it sound better while opening up.
