Back up guitar

A “back up guitar” is a secondary guitar that musicians carry as a safeguard in case their main guitar malfunctions during a performance or recording. It’s a spare instrument, often a different model than the primary, providing a safety net in situations where the main guitar is unusable.
Why use a backup guitar? Back up your files so back up your guitar.
Prevent performance interruptions:
A broken string, a faulty pickup, or a jammed nut can halt a performance. A backup allows the musician to continue without delay.
Maintain sound and style:
Even if the primary guitar has a minor issue, the spare can provide a similar sound, ensuring the performance isn’t negatively impacted.
Expand sonic palette:
Sometimes, a spare guitar can be used to achieve a different sound or texture, adding versatility to the overall sound.
Avoid repairs:
While a similar guitar can be used as a replacement, it can also be a tool to take the place of a guitar that needs repair.
What type of guitar should you choose for a backup?
Same type:
A direct replacement, like a spare Telecaster if you use a Telecaster as your main.
Different type:
A guitar with a slightly different sound or feel, allowing for some variety.
12-string:
A backup that can provide unique sounds or textures that a 6-string guitar can’t.
Less expensive or modified guitar:
Some musicians prefer to use a less expensive or modified spare guitar, as it’s less risky to use in a live situation.
