Fret end dressing is a process of smoothing and shaping the ends of guitar frets. This will eliminate sharp edges and improve playability. Sharp fret ends are caused when a guitar’s fretboard shrinks due to dryness. The fret ends protrude, becoming sharp and uncomfortable or even causing cuts. This is known as “fret sprout”. As a result it is necessary to dress the sharp sprouted ends. Fret sprout is primarily caused by low humidity. Maintaining a stable humidity level for your guitar is essential to prevent it.
The dressing improves playability: Rounded and smooth fret ends make playing more comfortable, especially when sliding or moving along the neck. It also contributes to a polished and professional feel for your guitar.
At Haywire Custom Shop we use a fret end dressing file for this operation. A specialized file has a “safe” edge to protect the fretboard and a rounded edge for shaping the fret ends.
