Key Installation Steps: Prepare the Surface: If a neck already has holes, fill them with wooden dowels (like BBQ skewers) and glue, then sand smooth to create a fresh surface. Initial Clamping: Use a C-clamp to hold the neck, body, and neck plate together. Place thin wood pieces between the clamp jaws to protect the fret board, frets and finish. Set perfect string "Margins": Before drilling, install the 1st and 6th E strings. While leveling corrects minor buzz and unevenness, a re-fret is necessary when frets are too worn or "ruts" exist, costing $12-$15 per fret, ensuring proper intonation, and maintaining the instrument's longevity, particularly for worn-out, unplayable guitars.Re-fretting and fret leveling at Haywire Custom Guitars Purpose: Replaces worn-out or damaged frets with new, high-quality fret wire. Process: Removes old frets, treats the fret board, and installs new wire for a "like-new" feel. When to Use: When frets are worn too low, have deep ruts, or are too damaged to be leveled. Cost: $12 per fret for standard, $15 per fret for bound fret boards. Haywire Custom Guitars +4 Key Considerations Action: Both services aim to allow for lower string action without buzz. Approach: Haywire prefers less invasive methods first (leveling) to preserve original fret wire. Diagnosis: If strings buzz and have poor sustain due to ruts, a re-fret is usually necessary. The finish has to last for a long time to protect the wood from absorbing moisture from the atmosphere as well as sweat from direct contact with hard working hands.

Regular guitar setups are not only an important part of playing your guitar or bass, but keep the instrument in-tune and Gig-Ready. We want to help you to play and sound your best at every performance. We'll assess the instrument for overall structural integrity: check the neck angle, correct bow or hump Check frets for straightness to keep it playing correctly Make sure frets are level, properly seated, and not excessively worn and level as necessary Visually inspect nut and string saddles for any imperfections, maladjustment and proper spacing If required, test that all electronic components are working correctly Set action, intonation, radius strings to fret board and set pick-up height where needed Test and play to get the overall feel correct for the specific player using that instrument We give our honest opinion based on years of professional instrument care and maintenance experience. Although it takes time to perform an adequate setup, we invite players to stay and watch us. We encourage them to ask questions and learn more about their guitars. Do you need one? 24 years ago, at Haywire Custom Guitars we featured several changes that pleased many of our core customers and one of those changes was “guitar neck shaving” for players with smaller hands. The move proved a big hit. Many players began to think that they can now get their favorite guitars where they want them. New orders for neck shaves were one of the most visible signs of that. Players were getting what they needed and a very reasonable price. At $135 for a custom shave of any thickness, and matching refinish, the total shaving process is a bargain. Suffice it to say a 2 day turn-around time is the second best part.

For example our extra large fret boards for players range from 1-7/8″ wide at the nut to 2-1/8″ wide. For players with small hands we shave down necks. This guitar was modified with the addition of a 2″ wide neck.
