Guitar neck shaving isn't about making a guitar conform to a trend. It is about making an instrument conform to the musician. If you have a guitar that you otherwise love but continually find yourself wishing the neck were thinner, smaller, rounder, flatter, or simply more comfortable, neck reshaping may be a practical solution. At Haywire Custom Guitars, the purpose of the work is simple: Make the guitar more comfortable so you can play the guitar better. You don't have to replace a great guitar simply because you don't like the shape of its neck. Sometimes the guitar is already right. It just needs to fit your hand.
A proper guitar maintenance setup and a string change is all about doing things in the right order. Start with a fresh set of strings, set the neck relief with the truss rod, dial in the string height (action), and finish by setting the intonation. Take your time and make small, deliberate adjustments. Re-tune as you go, check your work often, and use the right tools for the job. A good setup isn’t about chasing numbers—it’s about getting the neck, action, and intonation working together so the guitar plays and sounds the way it should. Work in a clean, well-lit space, use the correct hex keys and screwdrivers, and don’t force anything. Small adjustments make a big difference.
The correct guitar neck is the one that allows you to play comfortably and naturally. That is where guitar neck shaving, thinning, and reshaping can make a remarkable difference. At Haywire Custom Guitars, neck shaving is not about making every guitar neck thin. It is about changing the existing neck so that it better fits the player. Primary Benefits Better Comfort: Essential for players with smaller hands or those experiencing hand fatigue. Increased Speed: A thinner profile permits faster thumb movement and fluid transitions across the fretboard. Affordable Customization: Modifying an existing neck is vastly cheaper than buying a whole new custom guitar.
Step-by-Step: Setting Up Your Guitar: Intonation Proper intonation is a process of balancing the length of each string so the guitar plays accurately across the fingerboard. The 12th fret provides the reference point because it is the octave of the open string. Start with fresh strings. Strings develop uneven wear as they are played, and worn strings can produce misleading intonation readings. For an accurate setup, begin with a properly installed, fresh set of strings. Tune the open string precisely. Bring the string to exact pitch using a reliable electronic tuner. This establishes the reference point for the intonation check. Check the 12th-fret note. Play the string at the 12th fret using normal playing pressure. Excessive finger pressure can raise the pitch and give you a false reading. Compare the 12th-fret pitch to the open string. 12th-fret note is sharp: The string is effectively too short. Move the saddle backward, away from the neck, to increase the string length. 12th-fret note is flat: The string is effectively too long. Move the saddle forward, toward the neck, to decrease the string length. Make small adjustments. Intonation should be adjusted gradually. After each saddle adjustment, re-tune the open string before checking the 12th fret again. Moving the saddle changes the string's pitch, so skipping the re-tuning step can lead to an inaccurate adjustment. Repeat the process. Continue the tune–check–adjust cycle until the open string and its 12th-fret octave are accurately matched. Repeat for each string. Every string behaves differently because of its diameter, construction, tension, and interaction with the instrument. Each one must be evaluated and adjusted individually. The Important Part Intonation is not simply a matter of moving every saddle to a predetermined position. The final position of each saddle is determined by the individual string and the instrument. Proper intonation requires careful measurement, small adjustments, and repeated checking until the guitar plays accurately where it matters—under the player's hands.
Sweetened tuning involves applying minute, methodical adjustments—often just fractions of a cent—to the pitch of individual guitar strings, subtly shifting them flat or sharp. This technique addresses the inherent geometry of the fretboard and string gauge, ensuring that open chords resonate with clarity while eliminating unpleasant sonic interference. A common practice among guitarists involves first referencing a standard electronic tuner, then strumming an open D or G major chord while making methodical adjustments—slightly shifting the B or G string flat. This process continues until the notes resonate with clarity, ensuring the chord rings out without unpleasant sonic interference. At Haywire Custom Guitars We help Players make a difference!
Nut Width is the most critical measurement, determining the spacing of the strings at the head-stock end of the guitar. A standard electric guitar typically has a nut width around 1.65 inches (42 mm), while a wide neck is generally 1.75 inches or more. What to Expect During a Professional 8-Point Guitar Tune-Up. When a guitar is brand new or fresh from the factory it may not have had any adjustments done. As a rule, a guitar should be set up when first purchased (used or new) and again when switching string gauges. Consider getting a set up anytime the guitar sounds or feels different than it used to. Perhaps after a guitar travels (altitude changes, pressure changes, and humidity can affect the wood in the guitar) and just like changing oil in a car it is a good idea to get a set up every now and then for maintenance purposes (perhaps twice a year). A professional 8-point guitar tune-up maximizes your instrument’s play-ability, tone, and structural health. This comprehensive service addresses every critical intersection of the guitar to eliminate string buzz, fix tuning instability, and make the instrument feel effortless to play.

It could be that a fret level is sufficient to last several more years before a full fret replacement is required. If your current frets still have sufficient height but are causing buzz, dead notes, or poor intonation due to uneven wear. It is a faster, much less invasive and less expensive ($65) way to restore play-ability, often making a guitar feel great and players happy. Is this a good way to solve the problem? At Haywire Custom Guitars We Prioritize Precision When Adding A Neck Remember: You can only perform a great guitar set-up IF the guitar neck is added and aligned properly. Precision is THE priority. Key Installation Steps: Prepare the Surface: If a neck already has holes, fill them with wooden dowels (like BBQ skewers) and glue, then sand smooth to create a fresh surface. Initial Clamping: Use a C-clamp to hold the neck, body, and neck plate together. Place thin wood pieces between the clamp jaws to protect the fret board, frets and finish. Set perfect string "Margins": Before drilling, install the 1st and 6th E strings. Move the neck slightly left or right until the space between the strings and the fret board edges is perfectly even all the way down.more.....

Fine tuning guitar strings in pairs or using harmonics (relative tuning) is an excellent way to "sweeten" your tuning, often resulting in a more harmonious sound than relying solely on a digital tuner. By tuning relative to another string (e.g., 5th/7th fret harmonics), you can reduce the acoustic "beats" or dissonance caused by equal temperament, making chords ring more clearly. While electronic tuners are excellent for speed and accuracy in loud environments, tuning in harmony is a great way to fine-tune your instrument for better sonic resonance.

When guitar pickups suddenly stop working, It's a very easy fix for a guitar repair shop. As well a hobbyist who can solder, a guitar tech or a handy neighbor with a solder gun can do it too. First: 1) Identify the wire not connected. This can be done by removing the two outer screws from the control plate and carefully turning it over 180 degrees and sitting it back down in the hole (see example photo below). Now you can view all of the wiring on the control plate. 2) Look for one errant wire "not connected" to either the switch or the back of a volume or tone control pot (a usual ground wire location) with some solder still on the end. 3) Once identified look for a possible connection where it was once soldered. You can most likely see where it was joined in the circuit by checking to see and clump of solder without a wire connected to it. That's usually a clue as to where it broke away from. We just need to get them back together. 4) Simply solder the wire back and you should have it fixed.
Re-frettting and Fret leveling are considered upgrades Haywire Custom Guitars specializes in restoring play-ability through both fret leveling (re-crowning) and full re-frets. While leveling corrects minor buzz and unevenness, a re-fret is necessary when frets are too worn or "ruts" exist, costing $12-$15 per fret, ensuring proper intonation, and maintaining the instrument's longevity, particularly for worn-out, unplayable guitars.Re-fretting and fret leveling at Haywire Custom Guitars Purpose: Replaces worn-out or damaged frets with new, high-quality fret wire. Process: Removes old frets, treats the fret board, and installs new wire for a "like-new" feel. When to Use: When frets are worn too low, have deep ruts, or are too damaged to be leveled. Cost: $12 per fret for standard, $15 per fret for bound fret boards. Haywire Custom Guitars +4 Key Considerations Action: Both services aim to allow for lower string action without buzz. Approach: Haywire prefers less invasive methods first (leveling) to preserve original fret wire. Diagnosis: If strings buzz and have poor sustain due to ruts, a re-fret is usually necessary. Haywire Custom Guitars +3. Low guitar action can never be achieved on electric and acoustic without fret leveling and string buzz will always be present.
Is A Guitar Case Included? We get that question a lot when shipping new and used guitars. Let's talk frankly.... About Guitar Cases…………. [...]
Your guitar needs to be comfortable and light-weight enough to play for hours at a time in any situation without fatigue. The sound has to be clear and tone-great. It has to be built to withstand the rigors of being on the road whether touring or playing in local venues. It has to feel good to you when you play it. The action and feel need to be consistent all the way down the neck so you won’t be forced to alter your playing technique as you travel around on the fret board. A guitar players instrument needs to be in tune on every fret. We pay careful attention to the intonation settings. It has to look good for you and represent your sense of style. The finish has to last for a long time to protect the wood from absorbing moisture from the atmosphere as well as sweat from direct contact with hard working hands.
A Neck Pocket Finish Crack barely visible. Worry time?? A small surface crack barely visible to the eye in a guitar where the body joins the neck on either side can be worrisome at first glance. This is a very common occurrence for Stratocasters and other bolt-on neck guitars. It’s what we call a 'neck pocket finish crack.' Because the wood of the neck and body is more pliable than the thick paint, tiny shifts in temperature or humidity cause the finish to develop these hairline stress fractures. Since it isn't following the wood grain, it's purely cosmetic and won't affect the guitar's stability, playability, or tone. Sometimes they can appear around the input jack area as well.

Thanks for letting us work for you.For those with short and fat fingers, a wider nut width offers more space between strings, which can improve play-ability and reduce accidental muting. Wide Neck Electric guitars at the Haywire Custom Shop Haywire specializes in creating custom wide-neck guitars for players with large hands and fingers. Guitar pickup construction defines guitar pickup core tone through its magnets, wire windings, and physical design, which determine how string vibrations are converted to an electrical signal, with factors like magnet type (Alnico vs. Ceramic magnets), coil turns (more turns = hotter/darker), and placement (neck vs. bridge) creating distinct sounds, from warm and round to bright and aggressive. For a guitar player the message is clear. Look for a pickup that will deliver a clear clean undistorted signal to your amp. Once you have an excellent signal from your guitar, then you can process it any way you'd like.
Guitar pickups are simply microphones that “pick up” or “sense” the vibrations of the strings of your electric guitar. They convert the vibrations into sound that can be boosted with an amplifier. Many players are fooled into believing that they need new pickups. There is constant pressure on guitar players by the pickup manufacturers, guitar forums, peer pressure, improperly adjusted pickups, the wrong pickups in the wrong application, improperly wired pickups, poor supporting electronics such as a bad volume pot, incorrect electronics such as a poor application of the wrong capacitor in a circuit and many more reasons.

One has to remember that guitars are simply "tools" for musicians to get across a musical point. All are created slightly differently which can produce "different" sounds and tones. In some cases these slight changes can define a great instrument. The point is to "look with your ears" and not your eyes when seeking out a great guitar. Try not to select an instrument on the basis of "beauty" or "perfection" but how it feels, plays and ultimately sounds in your hands. Lots of great guitars have been passed up by using the wrong methods to select a great sounding instrument. Not everything in this world that looks perfect-"is perfect". Don't judge a guitar by how it looks.
This guitar pickup comparison will help player when deciding which pickup is best for them when comparing differences of two humbuckers.
On an electric guitar tones are affected by everything from the pickups and amplification to pedals, pickups to speaker enclosures. A guitar neck shave will not affect tone. If you have a guitar neck that you just love but it’s a bit too thick-we’ll shave it for you. Only $135.00 plus return shipping to your door will get you a professional guitar neck shave.
The Haywire Seven Sound-Switching option, will activate your neck pickup either on or off. As a result, Just a simple on/off (SPST) switch anywhere you'd like will work. We can simply add it into the pick guard, body or anywhere that is accessible for you. We'll add and install a small SPST toggle switch between your volume control and tone control.

Haywire Custom Guitars: Offers custom shop electric guitars and replacement necks with a range of wide options, from 1-3/4″ up to 2-1/8″ nut widths. Hand Fatigue: A neck that doesn't naturally fit a player's hand size, whether too wide or too thick, can lead to increased hand and forearm fatigue, making long playing sessions uncomfortable. Ultimately, the choice of neck width is a personal preference based on a player's hand size and desired playing style. The main benefits of a wider neck on an electric guitar are primarily related to comfort and better playability for certain hand sizes and playing styles, primarily by providing more space between the strings. The extra space between strings can make it easier to play complex chords, use fingerstyle techniques, and avoid accidentally muting adjacent strings, which is beneficial for some players.

Changing ALL guitar strings at once will cause a sudden and unexpected loosening of the neck and it will drop back into a backwards bow. Be sure and change only ONE string at any given time to cause the least amount of disturbance to the neck pull as possible. Sudden relieving of string tension on any guitar neck will cause the rod to pull the neck into a back bow.

Here's what you'll get after we add the 7 Seven Sound Toggle Switch between the Tone Controls. How it Works Standard 5-way switch: A typical Stratocaster uses a 5-way switch to select different combinations of its three pickups. The Added Switch: A mini-toggle switch or push-pull pot is wired to the neck pickup. New Combinations: Neck + Bridge: When the toggle switch is engaged, it adds the neck pickup to the standard bridge and middle setting, creating a neck and bridge combination. This is similar to the sound of a Telecaster. All three pickups: In positions 4 and 5 of the 5-way switch (which normally only use the bridge and middle, or just the bridge), flipping the toggle switch engages all three pickups simultaneously. This provides a full and fat-sounding tone.

A lighter guitar body is easier to balance on your body for extended periods of time when playing gigs. It can also resonate louder. Akin to hollow body guitars they are typically lighter even though they are solid body guitars. Lightness makes them more comfortable to play for long gigs.

Proper intonation is what makes a guitar’s strings play in tune as you fret different notes on the fret board. If the 12th fret note is flat or sharp, your intonation is off. On most electric guitars you can adjust the intonation for each string individually at the bridge with each saddle. It is impossible to place the frets on the guitar so that all notes on the instrument will be perfectly in tune in every key — simply impossible, because of the way tuning works. However in the shop, when building and setting up guitars, we take all of this into consideration.
We can add wider guitar neck for larger hands to any guitar however if you have large hands we have some special necks just for you! You have a choice at Haywire Custom Shop of: 1-7/8″, 2″ or 2-1/8″ widths with 22 frets. The best wide neck guitars for sale can be found at the Haywire Custom Guitar shop. They are the best for you because they are designed by you. You select the option, wood, weight, electronics, feel and tones. You get what you want and not what a music store wants you to have. Our wider necks for larger hands are for BIG guys. You know who you are and so do we.
In some cases, guitar neck replacement may be better than replacing the entire guitar. First of all, cracking finishes, worn frets and warping fret boards are common ailments of guitar necks. Therefore, replacing a bolt-on guitar neck is often a considerably less expensive option than repairing the damage or replacing the whole guitar. In addition we perform: Guitar Neck Replacement, Fret leveling, Nut filing Custom Guitar Neck Contours, Custom guitar neck shaping, thinning, shaving and profiling.
Guitar setups in Myrtle Beach Guitars can require seasonal truss rod adjustments. High and low temps and humidity fluctuations affect the way a guitar plays. We can do it while you're here and save time, trips and gas!

Do You Need a Cracked or Broken Guitar Headstock, Body, Binding, Top, Bridge or Saddle for your acoustic guitar repaired in the Myrtle Beach area? One of the worst feelings for a guitar player, comes when the headstock, body, binding, Top, bridge or saddle from a favorite guitar breaks off due to an accident. In most cases the damage can be fixed. The guitar can play and look as good as new. The most common broken guitar issue is a headstock is on a Gibson style guitar. The tilt back headstock lends itself to breakage due to the design. Send us your guitar and all the pieces and we’ll fix it for you. If you need a broken guitar headstock repaired, we’ll do it in 1-3 days, then back home to you.
In Myrtle Beach there are few guitar neck re-fretting options. Most guitar players really don’t give a lot of thought about frets, though they can influence both tone and playability. Instead, most players will view the frets as an integral part of a guitar’s fingerboard. If a guitar has a smooth, playable neck that allows you to bend notes, do hammer-on and pull-offs and deliver clean articulations at all positions up and down the neck, it means that the frets have been perfectly matched and properly “dressed” to provide the best overall action.
When is it necessary to "set up" a guitar? When a guitar is set up properly you’ll notice: The guitar will feel and sound its best all the strings will sound with exactly the notes they are supposed to. All notes will sound correct when played at each fret up and down the neck. Good guitar setups will make it easy to play. Strings will break less frequently. If a guitar plays easily and sounds its best then it's easy for the player to feel the music and play well.

First and foremost, a setup is of utmost importance in fine-tuning your guitar. Some players prefer to have super low action or strings close to the fret board while other players like higher string action. It's important to point out, the higher the strings the less in-tune your guitar will be.
A custom guitar has been a top choice for many guitarists for decades and continues to be a popular option for ultimate guitar features. This means features the player needs rather than what guitar companies try to push. After all, most guitar companies are run by lawyers and not guitar builders, designers or techs as they should be. When building players guitars, one really needs to be a guitar player. They are the ones who truly understand the needs of players. Lawyers and accountants spend little time thinking about what a guitar player needs when on-stage playing music for a living. As a guitar player, it's easier to understand another guitar player's performance needs.

Has your guitar become a little difficult to play sometimes? Does it sound, "out of tune"? Are the strings too high off the neck? Is your neck warped or bowed? Are the tuning gears difficult to turn? Are moving parts rusty? It could be that your guitar needs a tune up! A hard to play guitar could be a roadblock to your success as a musician. If you want your guitar to play better and faster, let Haywire prep your guitar. Get ready with our " 8 Point Gig Ready Process". It's necessary getting it ready for your Gig! This is the same process that we perform on all of our new instruments. It will put your “baby” back in shape. This allows you to play fast and in tune up and down the fret board like never before!
Many times when I ship a guitar from the humid deep South to a dry climate the neck sometimes will “hump” up a bit. This will cause what can be described as guitar neck misalignment and sometimes a “string buzz”. The best way to handle it is with a small truss rod adjustment at the head stock. Sometimes sending a guitar back for a small “tweak” is not always practical so here is a short guide to a small truss rod tweak that will give immediate results to a “string buzz” issue. The good news-it only takes a few minutes.

Installing a bolt-on guitar neck involves carefully attaching and aligning the neck to the guitar body using screws, ensuring proper alignment and a secure fit. This process requires precision to avoid damaging the guitar and to achieve optimal playability. Here's a step-by-step guide: 1. Preparation: Test Fit: Before any drilling, ensure the neck fits into the neck pocket. Alignment: Use the two E strings as guides to align the neck perfectly with the body. Marking: Mark the screw hole locations on the neck using a pencil. Depth Gauge: Use tape on the drill bit as a depth gauge to prevent drilling too deep. 2. Drilling: Pilot Holes: Drill pilot holes in the neck pocket, slightly smaller than the screw diameter. Clearance Holes: Drill clearance holes through the neck, ensuring they are large enough for the screws to pass through without binding. 3. Installation: Clamp: Use a clamp to hold the neck in place while you install the screws. Screws: Apply a lubricant (like dish soap) to the screw threads to help them turn smoothly. Secure: Tighten the screws on the bottom first then the two top screws. 4. Setup: Check Alignment: After installing the neck, double-check the alignment and adjust if necessary. String Action: Adjust the string height (action) to your preference. Intonation: Set the guitar's intonation to ensure proper tuning across the fretboard. Additional Tips: Neck Angle: Aim for a neck angle of 0-5 degrees relative to the body. Shims: If necessary, use shims to adjust the neck angle. Finish: Be careful not to damage the guitar's finish during the process. Professional Help: If you're not comfortable with this process, seek help from a professional guitar technician at Haywire Custom Guitars Inc. USA.
