Why is a new acoustic guitar unplayable?
I Just Bought Acoustic Guitar and It’s Unplayable!
Do play your guitar often?
The problem with a NEW guitar especially an acoustic is that it’s NEW!
Do play your guitar often?
A new acoustic guitar leaves the factory with very high action and it is not meant to be played until it’s set up correctly. It’s stiff, tight, fret edges are sharp from sprout, the neck slightly over bowed, tuners need grease, nut slots are not slotted, the nut is too high, the action is way too high, the strings are heavy and hard to play and make your fingers hurt. The music store is supposed to tell you-but sometimes they don’t know because no one told THEM.
Acoustic guitar problems occur therefore, because there is no proper setup included. The acoustic guitar factories typically send out guitars day after day. They never know who it’s going to end up playing them. They’ll say, “Well, we don’t set them with low action because we don’t know if possibly a slide player. Because they for the most part like higher action, and may purchase it”. Sure we get that. But then there are only 10 slide players out of every hundred.
acoustic guitar factories are oblivious where action is concerned…..
Guitar factories really need to relay their setup philosophy to stores who buy them. So, they in turn can tell it to guitar players. Most noteworthy and perhaps most important, why not give them an option to have a similar model side by side with a set up included? Set the new guitar for lower action so customers have a choice of either a high or low action guitar to purchase. That way it’s a win for the store. Give players an option of whether to buy a guitar set-up or not set up. We get calls like this all the time from customers indicating, “Hey, it’s NEW”. “Why is it so hard to play?” If there was a setup option with a new guitar they wouldn’t have to sell so many guitars. They could sell great service and make more money and more customers happy too.
Think about it?
Haywire Custom Shop Acoustic Burgundy
Let us get your guitar where YOU want it to be!
So….what does an acoustic guitar player do? The best way to deal with a serious playing issue is to contact an independent custom guitar/luthier shop to have the action set exactly, where they need it to be. In our Custom Shop in South Carolina we typically have the customer drop it off or ship it with instructions on how he wants it to play, we’ll perform a great guitar setup. When they come back to pick it up-we’ll ask them to test it out. If it’s fine-that’s great! If it needs more work to make it comfortable for them then we’ll tweak anything that needs to be done to get it where players want it to be while they’re right there to test it. Then, they won’t have to come back again with the same guitar problem.
Guitar factories really need to tell stores who buy them these guitars are not set up.
If the store know that in advance they could do something because customer playing requirements were important.
