I especially love the way it sustains with the treble bleed volume mod circuit. No loss of highs when the volume knob is brought down to any number 3-10. Haywire Tele-Takehiko Muto: Hello Rick, sorry for my late review. I’ve just come back to the U.S. today and received my Haywire Tele without any damage or problems. Let me say, it’s the most “PERFECT TELE” I’ve ever played. I really love the shaved neck and overall the balance of play-ability is really amazing. 6100 fret, 24 fret neck thinner neck, American bridge, and Seymour Duncans! I can say these are all in perfect balance. Just played 2 hours and It’s so nice and comfortable. I can never part with my Tele. I play guitar professionally around New Orleans and tour. Rick Mariner built a custom tele for me in Dec 2011. On phone we were able to identify all of the details I wanted in the guitar. Rick did a great job of communicating and then delivering on what we discussed. And fast. It’s a beautiful natural alder tele with a Warmoth compound radius neck (never had one of those before, it is great) and a humbucker at neck and “hot-rail” humbucker at bridge.
The guitar was set up lower than I actually needed. I raised action. Intonation and other adjustments were perfect. I’ve gone thru a LOT of guitars and this one should be the last one for me, except maybe a spare just like it. I play mostly in a trio format so I like the thicker sound of a humbucker tele, but I still can get that tele “twang” if I want to. Sustain is enormous, the tones are articulate and I guess the guitar just has what I would call “Presence”. If guitarists feel good about their guitar then there will be less roadblocks to their success as musicians.” Thank you, Rick.

Tommy Berntzen Guitar: I bought a midnight blue Telestrater from Haywire last year, and it is truly the most magnificent guitar I have ever looked at and played! it is a true beauty in the full sense of the word.I have never played a guitar with pickups with such a rapid response and such great clean tone. Both with and without distortion it sounds great. I am also extremely pleased with the neck, it makes it so much easier to move my fingers around and it has an incredibly good feel to it.
Most of all, I really couldn’t tell you enough how impressed I am in regards to your work at Haywire. I have looked through your website and at the other guitars. I recently received my new creation by Rick Mariner at Haywire Guitars. “The Violator” is an incredibly built Stratocaster. In this particular guitar I asked Rick to install a super distortion pickup made by DiMarzio in the bridge position. It also has a YJM single coil in the middle and an Eric Johnson Humbucker in the neck position.
This guitar is excellent for hard rock / metal. Being a Stratocaster is also just as great for blues and any other types of music that you might be into playing. Instead of just a volume post I had Rick install two tone controls as a traditional Strat would have.
The hardware is finished in gold and comes with a Floyd Rose Tremolo system. I also had a locking nut installed to keep the guitar in tune while Dive-bombing the trem. The body is finished in Charcoal Frost & the neck is vintage shaped, Flame Maple custom piece w/ an Ebony fret-board with block inlays. This guitar is my 2nd Custom Built from Haywire within 6 Mos. Haywire builds an excellent guitar!!!

Rolf Laurin-Haywire guitar. Playing guitar for over 40 years. In fact, I’ve had the good fortune to play many instruments. My new Haywire guitar is special. Also, components are upgraded, the finish is flawless, the guitar sounds great and plays better than anything I’ve owned or tried in the past. This set-up is exceptional, as a matter of fact its so easy to play that you have to get used to it.
Its that good. Contact with Haywire is always within 24 hours and and as a result, it was productive. The instrument is a sunburst American Standard Strat. The neck and center pick-ups are vintage with a SD humbucker in the bridge position. First, yes he did a custom install to get me the sound I was looking for. That`s Haywire for you. Second, the price was so reasonable I never expected to get the quality instrument and the quality set-up I actually received. There nothing else out there that can touch a Haywire. I wasn’t sure if I should buy a guitar with the name Haywire on the head-stock…if it wasn’t a “real” name-brand guitar…BUT, after comparing MANY name-brand & custom-made guitars AND very careful consideration, I decided to give Haywire a chance…
firstly, the guitars look amazing & the prices are low…in fact,being very skeptical…I’ve been playing for decades & never bought a guitar without playing it, but these guitars jumped out at me…
Secondly, I saw a Haywire SG (beautiful) & then a knock-out vanilla Strat & then an shiny silver Strat & back again…I couldn’t decide which one…this is where Rick Mariner of Haywire came in…he’s caring, knowledgeable & EXTREMELY patient…I bought the vanilla Strat, changed my mind & wanted the silver one. I eventually bought a natural SRV Strat that I wasn’t even thinking of buying. I LOVE IT! the workmanship is fantastic & it plays like a dream. It came set up perfectly …a truly beautiful guitar.

Since the late sixties I have owned and traded a many precious guitars. As for play-ability I could never have one guitar that satisfied me with all the needs I had. My Tele has great action but I miss the full sound of humbuckers, the Les Paul custom plays great but I sometimes miss that twangy sound of a fender. When I saw this guitar on Haywire web site, it was exactly what I was looking for.
The few I found and was ready to purchase where in the $2600 –$3000 range. When Rick sent me the details on this baby I did not need to think twice. I have had it for 3 days now and logged over 20 hours on it already;-) Love the neck action, I love the rich variation of sounds i am getting from this guitar. I’m Still discovering more possibilities with it. This is only guitar one needs to take to a gig. Does it all. It can’t beat. It’s light weight and comfortable even after several hours. I am lucky to have discovered Haywire guitars and this certainly will not be my last purchase from them.

David Cline Guitar. Firstly,”I just worked with Rick AGAIN on a custom Haywire Tele-Blaster and I am 110% satisfied with the results. The guitar looks like an early 50’s pawnshop prize maple neck Telecaster with a Duncan Little ’59 at the top loading bridge with a Gibson P-100 soap bar at the neck. Equally important, imagine grafting the sound of the meanest Les Paul with a smooth old jazz box in a Tele body. That’s my new baby. I never thought I could make that statement until now. The fit, finish, intonation, EMG Select pickups and sweet Warmoth neck is as good as it gets. Rick Mariner is a true craftsman, luthier and an exceptionally great guitarist to boot. I’ve just gotten back into playing and bought 2 Taylor classical guitars, both Academy models, one full body and one cut out. They played great right out of the box. As time progresed and I started getting onto scales and riffs the action just wasn’t 100%. It was good but you could tell the difference between the 2 guitars. I took the first guitar on a Tue. and got to talk with Rick and watch him work. It didn’t take him long and I could feel the difference just picking up the neck of the guitar. Strings perfectly flat across the frets and very easy action. So I took the cut out today and Rick took a little longer this time, needed just a little more to get it right. It is perfect. Both guitars are exactly the same. Super pleased. I didn’t think that it could be done having both guitars being set up the same. Rick is really good at it. Next is an older Fender. Have to get it back from my son but as soon as I do I’m going to take it to Rick. By the way, he lives on the river and it’s worth paying him a visit to see his custom work and sit on the porch.

I have spent close to 60 years – a serious and highly trained professional- in the music industry – as a live performer, composer, a licensed NYC educator, and a studio musician and consultant to recording artists and producers in the business. I am often referred to as a guitar virtuoso by my peers. When I walked into Haywire Custom Guitars, Inc. with my treasured but banged-up 2009 Gibson SG and introduced myself to Richard Mariner, I had no way of knowing at the time that I was putting my hopes and trust into the hands of not only a highly trained instrumentalist, but also a gifted luthier (I played a few Haywire guitars and plan on purchasing one of his hand-made beauties). Moreover, I would soon discover that he is a one-of-a kind master craftsman! Perfect Neck Shave. I had custom shop Tele that I couldn’t live with. It was fine at the first fret but got huge at the 12th. I was going to sell it, 6 months and a $1500 hit, but decided to take a chance. Rick worked with me to make sure it was perfect and now it’s my #1. Very reasonable for the work done.

Haywire is the absolute best!! I had a Custom Shop neck that was just too chunky for me. I took a chance on the neck shaving process from Rick at Haywire. I asked for a 60’s oval. Not only did he hit the mark, he exceeded it! Not only are dimensions nailed, he improved the overall feel of the neck with his special magic. I couldn’t be happier with my experience with Haywire. Neck done and returned within two days! Master craftsmanship at Haywire. Cannot recommend enough!

Working with Rick Mariner has been great. He was extremely thoughtful in helping me settle on a wide-nut guitar. When it arrived it was beautiful and perfectly set up. It plays extremely well and stays in tune. The neck is very comfortable. I suspect Rick selected it partly based on our conversation, although it is also one of his primary neck styles. The fret board is great. Rick has answered my occasional questions quickly and helpfully. I couldn’t have asked for better treatment or a better guitar. I plan to go back to him when I need another one.

So I was cursed with small hands. Unfortunately, the neck on my Jazzmaster was just too wide and over time my left hand got fatigued from playing. I reached out to Rick at Haywire Custom Guitars and explained my situation to him. I wanted a new neck with a slim 12″ radius. Without hesitation, he told me to send the body to him and he would make a new neck for me. I was nervous that it would not come out correct. But when it arrived back to me, I was overjoyed to feel this incredible new neck. I no longer have any fatigue in my left hand!

I have had three necks “shaved” by Haywire. A Fender CS Nocaster, a Fender American 70’s Stratocaster and a Jeff Beck Stratocaster. I prefer a harder V neck. All three came out better than I ever thought possible! Turn around time was super fast! I could not be more pleased!

I found Rick and Haywire Guitars through a Google search. I had a Les Paul with an incredibly chunky (and uncomfortable) neck and never played it. I figured I would send it to Rick with very low expectations (as I am a very discriminating player).
I was fascinated to learn the turn around time was 2 days. Living in NY (and now NJ), the turnaround for a simple setup takes 6 weeks! To be honest, I didn’t believe him when he said it would be 2 days!
24 hours after receiving the guitar, Rick had the neck shaved and resprayed and had it packed up and ready to ship back. I didn’t believe this was possible and was VERY apprehensive.
3 days later I get the guitar back and I could not believe how amazing it felt. I went from a chunky 1950’s rounded C shape profile to a 1960’s slim taper asymmetrical neck profile.
The respray was good, and not to factory specs as that would have meant sanding down the (and possibly removing) the serial number. However, it was blended well.
This guitar went from sitting on a stand to being played every day. I was shocked how spot on the profile was to my Les Paul Slim Taper Necks.
I HIGHLY recommend Rick at Haywire and will continue to send Rick my business (and recommendations).

I bought a new fender American neck for my squire body and had Rick file the nut string slots, and he set my intonation. Very reasonable for the great job he did. Rick has a ton of guitars he built himself and very reasonably priced considering that he sets them up and they’re ready to be played when you get it.

I had Rick reshape my Fender CS ‘66 jazz bass neck to my exact measurements and install Fralin pickups. An excellent job is an understatement. The neck plays amazingly and makes the bass that much better. I highly recommend it for those that are not happy with their neck shape. The turnaround time was incredibly fast, like two days annd the cost was extremely reasonable.

If I could rate this experience higher than 5 stars I would. I paid over $5000 for a custom 5 string bass guitar, and when I received it, the neck was far too thick for my smaller than average hands.
I got a LOT of advice as to how to do it myself, but none of the advice was sufficiently specific, and as I am no luthier, the thought of making a mistake and ruining the neck loomed large.
I found Haywire online while looking for DIY instructions, and after viewing their site and reviews, contacted them and sent Rick Mariner my bass’s neck.
Rick was meticulous. We exchanged many emails until he was certain of what I wanted, and even after receiving the bass, still had further questions to make sure I got what I wanted.
He turned over the neck in fewer than three days, modified the shoulders, and made the neck asymmetrical, narrower on the treble side, as well as changing the slope of the shoulder on the bass side. It came out perfectly and I am very grateful.
Additionally, once the work was done, Rick finished the back of the neck in such a way that you cannot tell by looking at it that it had been shaved, and the back of the neck looks EVERY BIT AS GOOD as it did before being modified.
I am so totally happy with the neck and ecstatic with the work that Rick has done that it is truly hard to express.
I would unquestioningly recommend Rick and Haywire to anyone considering modifying their guitar or bass to make it more playable and customized to your hands.
His prices are more than reasonable, and he turns over the work very quickly. A terrific experience overall.

Sent my guitar (Variax JTV-59P) in for neck shaving; the guitar is a beautiful instrument and the sound is great, but the neck was so thick it actually hurt to play it. The folks there were very personable, followed my specifications, and made good decisions where I had not indicated an exact preference. I am amazed at how well it came out, from the new specs to the thoughtful finishing job (and the incredibly fast turnaround). I like the feel of the finish and am happy to be rid of the thick plasticky finish on the back of the neck. It’s beautifully blended into the original with a sunburst/vignette style shading I find eye-catching. This guitar will now get its due; I will be playing it much more.

I contacted Rick at Haywire guitars for an ultra light stratocaster. I have shoulder and neck issues and needed something that wouldn’t add to my problems. Rick Mariner was awesome. He listened to my concerns and guided me through the ordering process with specs that would meet my needs. What Rick built for me was way beyond my expectations. Out of my small group of 3 guitars, the Haywire strat is by far the best playing guitar. The action is low and smooth with NO fret buzz at all. No intonation issues. Smooth frets for effortless bending and vibrato. I just can’t stop playing the Haywire strat. And it just beautiful. Haywire Guitars IS the place for an excellent, and light, stratocaster. Rick was great – I took the time to articulate what I was looking for on the guitar neck and he responded promptly with ‘can do’. It wss done super quick too, the work is great. – (I was super surprised at how quickly he got the work done. He received the neck in the afternoon and was completed about 4 hours later, same day, and was shipping it back the next morning!)
> He added inlay dots for me past the 12th fret on… which was a bit tricky since the neck is partially scalloped so he had to level the inlays after preparation. – (I wanted mother of pearl dots so I made sure to have those in the packaging for him.)
> And per request, also shaved down the neck to be similar to a wizard 3 Ibanez neck for me! It’s really amazing how a few millimeters makes a difference! I don’t have large hands so it’s nice, made it way more comfortable.

I have struggled for a few years, aspiring to “Intermediate” level, and even though I played nearly every day I hit a wall and began to lose interest in playing anymore. Trying to get back into playing I took my Taylor six string to Rick for a string change. He picked up the Taylor and immediately told me my strings were fine but my neck had never been set up, the strings being way too high off the fretboard. Rick made the neck adjustment, bringing the strings much closer to the fretboard, and instantly I was playing better and inspired to start playing again. I’ve gotten much better since, so I want to thank Rick for solving a problem I never knew I had until I brought my guitar to Haywire.

I just can’t say enough about this guys attention to detail, and his great work and communication! I was in need of a new neck for a Fender project. (Rick built my last Fender project). I shot him an email and we were off and running! He delivered exactly what I was in need of, 60’s style Fender strat neck with vintage hardware and trussrod adjustment at the heel of the neck. I asked for a “satinized ” back of the neck, because of where I live and the long hot humid summers. And man did he deliver 100%!!. I genuinely thought there was no hope for my guitar after a fall decapitated it. A friend highly recommended Rick, and I saw pictures on his Haywire website that gave me hope, so I arranged to get my guitar to Rick. A longtime musician, who also had a woodworking background, he was very understanding and assured me that he could fix it. Not only did he do a fabulous job of repairing it, he also gave it a tune up which, from his 50+ years of experience, made the guitar sound as great as it was designed to do. Forever grateful, my friend!

As a older guitarist I was finding that my Fender Strat, which I played for 25 years, was getting uncomfortably heavy to shoulder. But a true godsend, Rick at Haywire guitar came to the rescue, with a “lightweight ” alternative , with a Strat Natural Swamp Ash Strat Body, and Gibson SG style Maple/Rosewood Neck, which he based on my 2 historically favourite guitars, and the sound, feel, and action I was after.
I played the new guitar for about a month, but then unfortunately, due to an injury, had to take a forced 6 month break. I originally was looking for an lighter instrument to practice with, but when I got back to playing last year, I found myself just wanting to play the Haywire and have been since.
What a fantastic guitar! It’s got a brilliant vibrancy, clarity, and uniquely lovely chime, the most fun guitar I’ve ever played, musical and inspiring. He also put it together and shipped it in less time than it usually takes to have a guitar set up at my local music store.!
Can’t recommend Haywire Custom Guitars highly enough.

Rick Mariner and Haywire Custom Guitars is just amazing. I have only one complaint, he’s not located in Florida. I wish he was located just down the street. I’ve sent my prized Rickenbacker 370-12 to him twice within a month for tweaking the set up and replacing the nut. It was well worth the expense of shipping to get this guitar into his hands. I live in Florida near Pensacola and with all due respect there’s nobody in this area I would trust with this guitar. The other wonderful thing is in both cases Rick had this guitar turned around and coming back to me within a day. So the bottom line is this, I can give Rick my highest recommendation. If you have a prize guitar that needs some correction or modification this is the way to go.

One of the best in the universe. Rick at Haywire is a true genuine gentleman and guitar luthier/tech. One of the best I’ve ever had work on my guitars. I brought my Ibanez to him and told him what modifications I wanted done and he not only did everything I asked for but he went above and beyond. His shop is located in a very peaceful area with amazing vibes. I really can’t say enough about this dude. He is a gem of a find in Conway South Carolina.

Rick did a great job shaving the neck on my SG. He was able to both thin the depth and adjust the profile to my specifications, making it much more enjoyable to play. In addition, he was very flexible with scheduling, was able to complete the work in short order, and did so at a very reasonable cost. Highly recommend this small business.

I took two of my guitars to Haywire for adjustments. Rick set up both my acoustic and electric guitars with bridge, neck and intonation adjustments. Excellent work! He explained to me what he was doing and why. I really appreciated the work and played both the guitars for the rest of the day. After playing some of his Custom guitars while there I am anxious to go back. I have taken several more back since my first review. Ricks skills and professionalism continue to amaze me. I will be heading over again next week with a new guitar! Since my first reviews I have had two custom guitars made at Haywire! They are beautiful and play fantastic. I highly recommend Haywire Custom Guitars for all your needs. Great work at a fantastic price!

I bought a a Wide Neck 2” Nut Width Telecaster from Haywire Custom Guitars, and I am very happy with it. Wide Neck guitars are very rare, with 2” nut width being the rarest. Rick Mariner is a pleasure to work with – excellent and very responsive communications. I asked Rick to replace the Tuners and String Trees, with Locking Hipshot Tuners, and Graphtech TUSQ String Trees. It was no problem, and the additional charges were minimum – very fast turn around. The guitar is 5 lb., and light as a feather – but still well balanced. Rick told me they roast the Bodies in an oven for 48 hours to reduce the weight. The guitar is beautiful in looks, sound, and playability. The Pickups are really good. The finishes, detail work, and setup are all top notch. I have extra large hands, and require wide neck guitars – which are very rare, and usually gave sucky electronics and hardware – not so here. This is the first wide neck guitar I have bought that doesn’t need to go to the Luthiers for a complete overhaul. I love the guitar, and it was a pleasure working with Rick.

My experience with Rick at Haywire Custom Guitars has left me absolutely thrilled. When I decided to have my Jimi Hendrix Strat neck reshaped and shaved, Rick’s expertise and attention to detail were evident from the get-go. We had a thorough phone conversation where we discussed the specific shape and thickness I was aiming for, and Rick was incredibly helpful in addressing all my doubts. One thing that stood out was his insistence on me using calipers to ensure the measurements matched my favorite neck precisely – I’m glad I did.
The turnaround time was lightning-fast, and when I received the neck back, I was blown away. The new thickness feels just perfect in my hand, especially when I’m playing those thumb-over-neck chords. And let’s talk about that satin finish! It’s a game-changer, eliminating that sticky feeling I used to get when sliding up and down the neck. I’m pretty sure Rick even took the time to file the fret edges because I haven’t felt any sharpness.
I’m gonna have a hard time putting this guitar down. Hope my other guitars don’t feel too neglected. Rick, you’ve truly outdone yourself. Thank you for everything!

Rick is not only a pro-level guitar tech and internationally acclaimed luthier, he is a great player himself and one of the nicest, most personable folks around. His prices are also more than fair.
My 335 plays better than ever and my les paul copy now covers the spectrum of clean and dirt due to a perfect ‘bucker switch (pots as quiet as a church mouse) and pro setup.
Almost makes me want to be young again. With him around I feel I could hit the circuit. 🙂

I purchased a brand-new guitar online. When I opened the box, it seemed like more things were wrong with it than what was right. A friend recommended Haywire to me. I dropped off the guitar on Wednesday and picked it up the very next day. The neck got shaved and straightened out. All of the frets were fixed and had no more jagged edges and most importantly the guitar was set up like I have never had it done so good. I have owned countless guitars, but this guitar went from the worst to the best I have ever owned. It doesn’t matter where you live, please try working with Rick you won’t be disappointed. I will be sending more guitars his way.

Rick fixed the blemishes, bumps & bruises on my 1978 Martin HD-28, all the while leaving everything original, except the new pick guard. He advised that the guitar was ‘opened up’ and should be left alone. He also did a reset & it plays better than ever. Thanks, Rick.

Just visited with Rick to go over a few things with 2 of my guitars. I know just enough to be dangerous and Rick was extremely patient and accommodating, which is greatly appreciated. His prices for the invaluable services he provides are unmatched. I have to say too, Rick is amazing. I reached out unsolicited asking for help and he bent over backwards and invited me into his domain. Took him 2 minutes to figure out where my problem was and fixed it. Rick is a dying breed, for sure. If you’re a guitar player, even tinkerer, go see Rick. His customs are awesome as well. Highly recommend!

My guitar arrived safe and secure. After Ric’s handy work, I have never had a guitar so comfortable. As a veteran player of 50 years having used many guitar technicians over the years, this company by far is the best. The neck was perfect with paper then fret action. My hand wraps around it with such ease. Haywire’s work made me want to be a serious player again. I highly recommend them without reservation!

If you’ve been playing guitar for any length of time, you get to the point where you’ve played your guitar enough to generate some significant wear and tear on it, and few of us are capable of working on our own instruments. If you’re like me, you’ve tried… and then taken your guitar to a luthier to have it worked on. Both to fix the original problem, and the problems you introduced when you took matters into your own hands!
Over the years here on the Central Coast, I’ve taken my guitars to all of the local guys. Unfortunately, I have never found a go-to guy within reasonable driving distance. Every time I have tried a local shop, my instrument is either no better than it was, or it’s worse than before I took it in. This may be what’s keeping the Guitar Centers and Sweetwaters of the world in business selling new guitars.
And speaking of new guitars, the last guitar I bought from a music store was setup really poorly, and worse – it wasn’t grounded correctly at the factory and hummed and buzzed something awful unless I was holding it a certain way. Frustrating, no?
When I decided to put my music studio back together 5 years ago, I decided to buy a new guitar to get myself off on the right foot. I spent a while looking online for a custom instrument, and long story short, stumbled upon Haywire Custom Guitars. The owner, Rick Mariner, was super helpful, super friendly and super patient with me as I asked him dozens of questions. I decided to buy a custom Stratocaster from him, because he was teaching me so much about how a guitar should be setup… I knew he got it. What’s more, I live in a very small town on the Central Coast of California named Lompoc (pronounced Lom-poke). There are people who live within 60 miles of here who have never heard of it! Rick asked me where I was, and I told him “a small town in central California… you’ve never heard of it”. He said, “try me”. Turns out he had lived here for 10 years! Small world.
So, I ordered the Strat, and when I received it I was stunned at how perfectly it was setup. Action? Perfect. Electronics? Silent. Intonation? Spot-on. I’d never played such a perfectly setup guitar, yet alone owned one. Stoked!
So after playing it for a few months, I decided to have him restore my ’77 Gibson Les Paul Custom. I was a little hesitant, because I’m adding round-trip shipping from Lompoc California to Myrtle Beach South Carolina and the Les Paul weighs a TON, but I figured there was no possible way I could get his quality workmanship locally. Well, once again, the results were nothing short of stunning. The Gibson was setup even more perfectly than the Strat! His work was very reasonable which made the shipping cost easier to swallow.
I sent him the Strat to work on after beating it up for the next 3 years – same deal.
Finally, I have an ’87 Charvel Model 6 that I always loved playing, but even brand new it was improperly grounded (which I cured with an ugly external wire) and that had loose hardware in the tremolo that made the G/B/E strings sound like a sitar when I played it. But the straw that broke the camel’s back was that I broke it out to tune it about a month ago, and the string claw snapped off. Off to Rick it went!
Well, I received it back a week ago. It’s the most perfect guitar I’ve ever played – and after the Strat and Gibson, that’s saying something.
