What does a Coil Split Switch do?
A coil split switch on a guitar allows a humbucker pickup to be used in a single-coil mode. Because it is essentially “shutting off” one of the two coils within the humbucker. In fact, this essentially makes it a single-coil pickup. This provides access to a single-coil tone, which is often brighter and more dynamic than the humbucker’s typical sound. So a player can go from a humbucker to a single coil tone with a wave of his hand.
You’ll love having all of the sounds and features of the two most popular single and double cutaway style solid body guitars combined into one amazing instrument.
The 2 pickup design with enhanced switching configuration allows the player to evoke the sounds of Hendrix, Clapton, and more. Change from country to rock sounds with a mere flip of a switch!

Asa result, this effectively changes the sound of the guitar from the typical humbucker tone to a brighter one. A real single-coil sound, providing a wider range of tonal possibilities.
Elaboration:
- Humbucker:Humbuckers are a type of electric guitar pickup with two coils wound together, designed to reduce noise and hum.
- Single Coil:Single coil pickups have only one coil and are known for their bright, high-frequency tones.
- Coil Splitting:The coil split switch disconnects one of the coils within the humbucker, effectively turning it into a single-coil pickup.
- Tonal Changes: As a result, when the humbucker is split, the output is reduced. Now, the sound becomes brighter and less “fat” or powerful, similar to a single-coil pickup.
- Switch Types:Coil splitting is typically achieved using a toggle switch or a push/pull pot (volume or tone knob).
A toggle is a much better
Furthermore, a toggle is a much better means of switch activation than a push-pull switch. For a pro guitar player to completely take his hand away from the strings he is out of the song. In a split second of the amount of time it takes to grab and pull up a knob, it can be done much quicker. Think about it. With a simple wave of a hand in between strums a guitarist can flip the mini-toggle quickly without notice. Therefore, a player can then be back in the song in between notes instead of being out for a bar or more. It makes more sense to use a toggle if you’re a pro. At Haywire Custom Guitars we’ll add the coil split switch between the tone controls, out of the way and still convenient to use.
